1-DAY ALTERNATIVE: SUMMER PASTURES
1-DAY ALTERNATIVE: SUMMER PASTURES
OFFERS OF JUST 1 DAY TAKING PLACE IN SUMMER: from 3 to 6 or 7
hours of effective walking
Since in July and August the route of
shepherds and transhumance is less comfortable because
the strong sunstroke, we propose you a series of 1-day walks through
the summer pastures of the transhumant flocks
of sheep around the whole region of the Ribagorça (both
in Aragon and Catalonia).
We will sleep in rural accommodations of the villages of Aneto,
Senet and Vilaller located in the Valley of Barrabés, in
the top of Noguera Ribagorçana river.
We will visit the sub-alpine and alpine territories where livestock
farming has shape grassy landscapes with a very rich flora. We
will take advantage of the itineraries and prepare digital herbarium
–without colleting plants–, bird watching and enjoy the spectacular
corners of the Pyrinnes.
Duration: from 3 to 6 or 7 hours of
effective walking depending on which itinerary is selected
PROPOSED ITINERARIES:
Aragon’s Ribagorça (influence areas and protected areas
in the Natural Parc of Posets-Maladeta)
Catalan Ribagorça (influence areas
and protected areas in the National Parc of Aigüestortes and Estany
de Sant Maurici)
Castanesa Valley
1 journey of 5 to 6 hours
of effective walking
This is one of the most relevant pastures in the area. Just
20 years ago huge flocks of thousands of sheep would come to
this valley from the plain of Lleida and Aragón, and would stay
here all summer long eating the thin grass specific of this
mountain. Nowadays, you can watch spread groups of horses and
cattle. To sum up, this is one of the landscapes that still
in our days show us signs of its rich transhumant past.

Salenques
and Rigüeno Valleys

rock of Maladeta and surrounding mountains. In the highest parts
of these valleys, there are several open spaces less steep with
grasslands of abundant pastures, as well as some buildings and
shepherds’ shelters.
